The problem is not the water. It is what is in it.

A clean supply-line break is an extraction and drying job. A sewage backup is a decontamination job that happens to involve water, and the two are not handled the same way at any stage.

Category 3 water means grossly contaminated: bacteria, viruses, and parasites, in a medium that soaks into every porous material it touches and disperses into the air as it is disturbed. Which is why the wrong first move. A shop vacuum, the HVAC left running, a family member mopping. Reliably turns one contaminated room into a contaminated building.

Porous material that absorbed it does not get cleaned. It gets removed, bagged inside containment, and disposed of under protocol. Then the structure gets sanitized, dried, and rebuilt.

Toilet Backflow

Sewage cleanup questions

We would strongly advise against it. Category 3 water carries bacteria, viruses, and parasites, and the risk is not limited to what you touch. Aerosolised contamination spreads through a building on air currents. Household cleaning products do not address it and a wet vacuum redistributes it. Keep people and pets out of the affected area and let a crew with proper PPE and containment handle it.

The IICRC classifies water by contamination. Category 1 is clean supply water, Category 2 is used water with some contamination such as a washing machine discharge, and Category 3 is grossly contaminated: sewage, toilet backflow beyond the trap, rising groundwater, and any water that has sat long enough to grow a microbial population. Category 3 requires containment and disposal protocols, not just extraction.

Porous material that absorbed contaminated water generally cannot be restored and must be removed. Carpet and pad, affected drywall, insulation, particleboard, and most soft contents in the affected zone. Non-porous surfaces and semi-porous structure can usually be cleaned, sanitized and dried. We document everything removed, because that inventory is what the claim rests on.

That depends on the extent and on the drying, and it is not a number we will invent to make you feel better. Removal and sanitization happen first, then the structure dries to standard, and where contamination was significant we arrange independent verification before the space goes back into normal use.

Often only with a specific sewer or drain backup endorsement, which many standard policies do not include by default. A backup caused by a sudden covered event may be treated differently from one caused by long-term blockage or municipal issues. We document the cause and the timeline thoroughly, but the coverage determination is your carrier's.

Responsibility usually turns on where the blockage sat. The lateral from the building to the property line is typically the owner's, and the main beyond it is typically the municipality's. Either way, the cleanup should not wait on that being resolved. Document conditions, report it to the city if a main is implicated, and get the contamination out of the building.
